What is Mortgage and Rent Insurance?

Mortgage and Rent Insurance will give you regular monthly payments if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury. And your payments won’t be affected by any ACC support you receive.

There are several ways Mortgage and Rent Insurance can be used:

  • Residential property - can cover up to 110% of your mortgage repayments, this allows a little extra to help with rates, insurance or maintenance
  • Investment property – can help you cover mortgage payments on your investment properties
  • Your rent – can help you cover your rent payments

Another option you could consider is Workability Insurance which also provides a monthly benefit. Workability Insurance is a form of Income Protection but it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles so can be a great cost effective option.

Frequently asked questions

How is it different to Income Protection Insurance?

Mortgage and Rent Insurance is generally for people who want to just protect the roof over their head if something should happen, and can look after other expenses using other means. Your adviser will be able to discuss which policy works for you. What's great is that it also pays the benefit even if you’re receiving ACC weekly compensation if an accident has stopped you from working.

How long will I have to wait before my payments start?

When you set up your policy, you’ll decide how long the wait period is before you start receiving payments. Chat to your adviser about the different options – there’s 30, 60 or 90 days wait to choose from.
